The Ballad of Matt & Mica
Magdalena Bay is a synth pop duo featuring Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin. They released a concept album, Imaginal Disk, which tells the story of a reality in which humans receive software updates via a disk inserted into their forehead. When it comes time for the main character of the album, True, to receive her update, her body rejects the disk. She is forced to relearn what it means to be human.
The first thing you notice about Magdalena Bay is Mica’s unusually captivating vocals. Her voice brings an ambient feel to the album, while Matt balances it out with his groovy bass lines.

My favorite song on the album has to be “That’s My Floor.” The meaning of this song is unclear, but I believe it to be the point in True’s story where she begins to see the flaws in herself and others. Throughout the song, she’s talking to someone, seemingly a male love interest. True is testing her limits as a human and seeing others through a new perspective.
