“Vulture City” - Venturing (Jane Remover)
Genre: Alt/Indie/Shoegaze
“Vulture City” is a shorter song released under the artist name Venturing, which is really an alias created by the hyperpop/shoegaze artist Jane Remover. The song describes the deep need for possession when intertwined with love. I recommended this song because I think there’s no other like it. Listening to this song makes me feel like I am in a movie, walking down the street on an overcast day.

“Twilight” - boa
Genre: Alt/Rock
“Twilight” by boa is one of the many amazing songs from The Race of a Thousand Camels. I chose this song specifically because of the feeling it evokes when I listen. It describes the extreme emotional turmoil of a love triangle, delving into concepts of longing, desperation, unrequited love, and conflict. The overlap of the major and minor keys (Bm & GM) throughout the song really massages the brain.

“Bull Believer” - Wednesday
Genre: Alt/Indie/Post Punk
“Bull Believer” by Wednesday has slowly become one of my favorite songs. First recommended to me by Eli Erickson, it took me a while to get around to listening to this song. Once I did, I understood why he hyped it up so much. The unique singing style of Karly Hartzman is the first noticeable thing — she can so easily flip the tone of her voice. The song is separated into many different sections distinguished by the composition, which is also strangely done in a way that perfectly fits. There are many points throughout the song where you think it’s over, but it continues, almost in a different setting. One of the most beautiful parts of this song is the meaning. They use the analogy of hunting a bull to represent watching a loved one succumb to addiction. So much emotion can be felt through the course of the song, from the soft beginning to the screaming end. While this song is heavy, it’s definitely worth listening to.

“Groupie” - Leonie Biney
Genre: Indie/Bedroom Pop
Leonie Biney is a newer artist with a small following. Starting from Instagram, she grew fast from her angelic voice and incredible guitar skills. I specifically chose this song because of the lyrics. They sound so mundane, while also carrying deep meaning. “Groupie” explores the feeling of being a superfan — of loving a musician to the point of obsession and wanting so badly to be close to them, but feeling just out of reach. I feel we have all been in that place at one point or another, and she so eloquently captures the feeling. As a bonus, the music video is beautifully done and really ties the song together with the story.
